The Making of No Exit Lane (DEMO)

No Exit Lane (DEMO)

I spent a lot of time working on a Demo for my game No Exit Lane which I made for a Uni assignment. I plan to expand this in future, though I have many projects going on at the moment, so it may be a while.

My initial inspiration was P.T. and its mechanic of looping the player through a house. I thought I could do something similar with a looping road.

Modelling

For this project, I did a lot of 3D modelling and learnt my way around Blender a fair bit. I put a lot of effort into modelling the car, finding measurements online and trying my best to make something realistic.

I think this was a flawed approach, since it is meant to be a PSX style game but hey it taught me a lot. I made a timelapse of the car modelling process which you can see ⇲ here

Audio Design

I sourced my sounds mostly from Pixabay and used FMOD to create sound events. My favourite event I put together was the TV static sound. I used various layered sounds that randomly activate. Some of the sounds include pitched down versions of pieces of music I made in the past. There are also some military communications that can be heard rarely, as well as a jumpscare.

My favourite part

My favourite feature of the game is that the car follows behind the player at a distance. I used Unity's spline system to accomplish this. It adds a sense of paranoia to the game.

What I learnt

I really focused on perfecting everything as I went along. I spent a lot of time on individual models and audio events, polishing them as I went along in order to make the game feel immersive but, in the end, this meant that the game turned out barebones, with fewer scripted events than I had planned, so for now, I have released it as a demo, and I wish to expand upon it in future.

What's behind the door?

I am so thankful and grateful to everyone who has played the game so far. It's amazing seeing people enjoy something I made, though I know it's far from perfect. I noticed, in a playthrough that someone posted in my itch.io comments ( IndieHorrorGame's video), that they tried to open a door in the house which was unopenable. I mean obviously there should be something behind it right? Otherwise, why would it be there?

You'll have to wait and see :>
